Liquid chromatography (LC) is a separation technique in which the mobile phase is liquid. Liquid chromatography can be carried out either in a column or a plane. Liquid chromatography generally utilizing very small particles and a relatively high pressure is referred to as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The liquid chromatograph is intended to analyze various substances. It can be applied to quality control of foodstuff and medicinal preparations, to define pollutants in drinking, surface water and sewage, to learn the structure of biological environments. The liquid chromatograph is provided with special chromatography software also known as a Chromatography data system, which collects and analyzes chromatographic results delivered by chromatography detectors. In HPLC the sample is forced by a liquid at high pressure (the mobile phase) through a column that is packed with a stationary phase composed of irregularly or spherically shaped particles, a porous monolithic layer, or a porous membrane.

The liquid chromatograph consists of three main functional parts: the source of a stream of the relative frame phase with the tank, the pump and the filter. Depending on a design of elements of this block it can contain the device for formation of gradients of the relative frame phase, decontaminator and a special device for smoothing pressure pulsations if it is required by a detector and pump design. Chromatographic columns and sometimes preliminary column are included into the dividing block of a chromatograph for saturation together with the thermostat and the device for input of tests. The block of detecting represents the detector or system of several detectors.

The liquid chromatograph GILSON 302 exploits 4 kinds of detectors:
* the most commonly used ultraviolet detector;
* fluorimetric detector for the selective detection of the selective components;
* electrochemical detectors for substances that are either oxidizable or reducible; the electrical output is an electron flow generated by a reaction that takes place at the surface of the electrodes;
* electrical conductivity detector measuring the conductivity of the mobile phase.
